Certified teachers in Louisiana may add-on additional certifications to their teaching certificate by completing requirements found in Bulletin 746: Louisiana Standards for State Certification of School Personnel. Teachers must be enrolled in the University to be able to register for coursework towards add-on certification. Active enrollment can be achieved through applying as a graduate student to the non-degree Add-on Certification program. The decision to admit is based on having a valid teaching certificate. The Graduate Handbook provides important information about how to register for classes, how advising works, etc. Students admitted to the Add-on Certification program are considered graduate students.
Add-on certification must be added to a valid Louisiana teaching certificate. Coursework Requirements

The Teacher Leader Endorsement consists of the first two courses in the Master of Education in Educational Leadership degree program. For applicants who wish to pursue the endorsement only and not apply to the Master of Education program, the applicant must apply to Southeastern as a Non-Degree, Add-On Certification student and follow the steps listed below.
The applicant must apply for Non-Degree, Add-On Certification status to Southeastern Louisiana University online through the Graduate Admissions Process website and if the application permits, note that the add on certification is for the Teacher Leader Endorsement in Educational Leadership.
The applicant must submit to the Office of Admissions a copy of one's valid teaching certificate showing the name of the university through which the teaching certificate was obtained. If the name of the university is not listed, the applicant must submit verification of the university through which the certificate was obtained. This could be an unofficial or official transcript that lists the granting of the teaching certificate on it.
The applicant must submit the required Immunization form to the Office of Admissions.
Admissions will send the completed application to the Dean of the College of Education who in turn will send it to the Program Director for a decision on admission to the program.
Once the applicant has been accepted into the Teacher Leader Endorsement program, permission will be given to register for the two required courses-- EDL 610 Research Methods for Educational Leaders and EDL 612 Fostering Vision and Leadership in Educational Environments.
If the applicant later decides to pursue the Masters program, the two courses will count toward the Master of Education degree in Educational Leadership as long as all courses required for the M.Ed. degree can be completed within six years of the date of graduation. However, the applicant must change the admission status to the Educational Leadership Masters program and apply to the Program Director for admission to the Master of Education in Educational Leadership program.
Upon successful completion of the two courses, the student must then have the employing district send an Evaluation, Add-On, Course Approval & Name Change Application (Application Type - EV) and any other documents (e.g., transcripts) to the Louisiana State Department of Education to add the new area to the existing teaching certificate.
